is that so idealistic, interwebs? That people have the ability to be exposed to a series of ideas, from which their own opinions and motivations are formed?
I had a rather heated conversation tonight that got me thinking, and I honestly believe that people have the ability to think for themselves and it is in our human nature to strive to work hard, be better, do better. No one can fault someone for failing if he or she has tried to the best of their ability to be all they can be. However, you most certainly can hold a person accountable who does nothing to improve themselves and try to be better, for a person who simply settles for failure. As humans we have the intellectual capability to make our own choices, to decide to settle or change our lives. The only destiny we have is what we make for ourselves, and we have the power to take control of our own lives.
I have to believe that.
As a political system, no, that might not be the best way to go, and I’m not saying that it is. It is awful that those few people who can’t help themselves get swept up in the crowd of those that won’t help themselves because they get ignored and left behind. It is terrible, but it is also, unfortunately, our reality.
Yes, we should do what we can to help everyone, absolutely, without a doubt. But it’s like a system of triage. You help the ones you can and you do your best, but you have to accept the fact that sometimes you can’t help everyone. It’s just not possible.
We have brains and intellect for a reason. Thinking is free. Do more of it.
