The Secret of Kells

Oh, and go watch this movie... NOW.

The Secret of Kells. It's amazing. I'm sort of in love. It hasn't left my DVD player in over a week. Legit, it's Irish Animation at it's best. It should have kicked Up's arse at the Oscars, hands down. There seriously isn't any competition, in my opinion. And my Irish Cinema professor was an animator for the freaking Ninja Turtles, so that's saying a lot ...

Aisling’s Song
You must go where I can not,
Pangur Ban Pangur Ban,
Nil sa saol seo ach ceo,
Is ni bheimid beo,
ach seal beag gearr.
Pangur Ban Pangur Ban,
Nil sa saol seo ach ceo,
Is ni bheimid beo,
ach seal beag gearr

You must go where I cannot
Pangur Ban, Pangur Ban
It’s a misty old world
and we are only in it for
a short, sharp while

I felt the same way after a trip downtown, to the only theater in Chicago where it was playing (for one week).

I want everyone to see it. But I don't know whether it will get a wide release in the States. And it will be a long time before a DVD is available here.

I'm tempted to order a DVD from Ireland, if I can haywire my player to do Region 2.

You sound like someone who would enjoy reading Tomm Moore's blog: http://theblogofkells.blogspot.com/

Go back through it a few years and the story of the production will unfold. Lots of art there, too... model sheets, concepts, etc.

He's started a blog for the new production as well:

Oh, haha I'm obsessed with Tomm Moore's blog! Absolutely obsessed! By now, I doubt there is anything about Kells that I don't know.

I think it's finally being released in the States in October 2010, but I'm not too positive. I only have the Region 2 disk, and it's killing me that I can't watch it since I've moved away from Ireland!

The film is really worth taking a look into, too. If you do a little bit of research behind the art and really look into the celtic symbolism and imagery - it's really amazing how it was all achieved. And then when you come to think about how Moore and his team just created this entire mash-up of the monk tale from the actual Chi-Rho page (on display at Trinity College, Dublin), the real cat named Pangar Ban,The Story of Tuan Mac Cairill, and the actual myth of Crom Cruac! I could go on and on!

If you're at all interested in Irish animation, I would suggest checking out Brown Bag Films, too. They were Oscar Nominated for their short, Granny O'Grimm's Sleeping Beauty.

There's also another claymation video called Guy's Dog that is a real riot on a Dublin-satirical level.
